![]() ![]() ![]() In adult humans, the Eustachian tube is approximately 35 mm (1.4 in) long and 3 mm (0.12 in) in diameter. It is covered with ciliated epithelium and is thin in the osseous portion, while in the cartilaginous portion it contains many mucous glands and near the pharyngeal orifice a considerable amount of adenoid tissue. In anatomy, the Eustachian tube, also called the auditory tube or pharyngotympanic tube, is a tube that links the nasopharynx to the middle ear, of which it is also a part. The mucous membrane of the tube is continuous in front with that of the nasopharynx, and behind with that of the tympanic cavity. The diameter of the tube is not uniform throughout, being greatest at the pharyngeal orifice, least at the junction of the bony and cartilaginous portions, and again increased toward the tympanic cavity the narrowest part of the tube is termed the isthmus. The main functions of the ear are, of course, hearing, as well as constantly maintaining balance. It is situated bilaterally on the human skull, at the same level as the nose. The ear is a complex part of an even more complex sensory system. ![]() Base at the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx, called the torus tubarius or cushion (elevation) , behind the pharyngeal orifice of the tube. 1/4 Synonyms: External auditory meatus, External acoustic pore, show more.Apex at the medial end of the osseous portion of the tube,.Made from triangular plate of elastic fibrocartilage. The cartilaginous portion is approximately 24 mm long.It aerates the middle ear system and clears mucus from the middle ear into the. End at the angle formed by the junction of squamous and petrous portions of the temporal bone. Overview The eustachian tube (pharyngotympanic tube) connects the middle ear cavity with the nasopharynx.Starts in the carotid wall of the tympanic cavity, below the tensor tympani muscle The eustachian tube is a narrow one and a half inch long channel connecting the middle ear with the nasopharynx, the upper throat area just above the palate. The bony (osseous) portion has a length of approximately 12 mm.It consists of an osseous and a cartilaginous/fibrous tissue. It is approximately 36 mm in length and is directed downward, forward, and medially. The Eustachian tube is the channel through which the tympanic cavity communicates with the nasopharynx. ![]()
